About us

Who are we?

The Anglo Cypriot Theatre is an acclaimed, enthusiastic Amateur Dramatic Group based in Nicosia, Cyprus. All our members are linked by a desire to participate in and promote English-language drama in Cyprus. Our membership comprises a mixture of Cypriot nationals and expatriates of many nationalities (the ‘Anglo’ in our name alludes to the fact that our productions are in English). Membership numbers vary as expatriates leave and come to Nicosia but we average around 120+ members of all ages, young children upwards.
ACT is quite family orientated and there are one or two families who have produced third generation actors/production crew! We have also had several of our younger members progress into the professional world of drama and entertainment, both front and back stage. We try to keep a keen eye on their exploits.

What do we do?

We have a reputation in Cyprus for the quality and range of the productions we perform in public. We try to have at least four productions each year and these can be comedies, tragedies, Shakespeare, farce, revues, pantomimes, mysteries etc. While there is a constitution and a properly elected committee to manage the group, there is no pecking order or timeserving in our approach. Everybody plays/assists to his or her abilities and there is considerable flexibility in how jobs are shared out. We are always pleased to welcome new members as actors, directors, production team, backstage crew or supporters. For those wishing to appear on stage our belief is ‘there are no small parts, only small actors’. You could play the lead role in one play and a dead body in the next as our success comes from the passion and dedication of a full team effort. We also have an active social side. If you don’t feel you are up to being on stage or a part of the production team you will be able to enjoy various social functions which we have during the year. These can include fun evenings such as ‘Ready Steady Cook’, ‘workshop for all’, play readings, wine & cheese soirees and our infamous end/start of season parties.
ACT is also very well known for the support that we give to local charities. Each year our members select two charities to whom we make considerable donations. In addition, besides these two ‘official’ charity beneficiaries, we make ad hoc contributions to other charities which might approach us for specific needs during the year.

How did we get here?

ACT was born in 1982 with a production of Noel Coward’s ‘Private Lives’. The following years saw a gradual increase in the number and variety of shows. The emphasis was on comedies in the earlier years. This was then offset by ‘heavier’ material as the actors, directors and off-stage people gained experience and confidence. Because the emphasis was on making each production as ‘professional’ as possible,
ACT began to attract ex-professional actors/directors who had come to the Island to retire/semi-retire but who couldn’t resist ‘treading the boards’ or directing once again. Obviously this in turn led to a unique learning experience to the existing members and helped develop ACT into the drama force we are today. Whilst our productions have been predominantly performed in Nicosia, over the years we have taken some productions on the road to Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos. We have also performed at the annual Shakespeare at Curium in Episkopi and taken part in several of the annual Rosebowl Festivals (for one-act plays), winning various awards along the way.

What do we aim for?

We’ve been around for 30 year  and so, yes, we are proud of our accomplishments over that time and the progress we have made. From little acorns.....etc...etc.  But to quote Henry Ford: ‘...history is more or less bunk. It's tradition. We want to live in the present and the only history that is worth a tinker's dam is the history we make today and tomorrow.’  ACT certainly has a glorious past but what about our present and our future? What are we aiming for? How about this........

to stage a wide range of plays, on a regular basis, aiming for excellence
in all aspects of each production
to challenge expectations of what an amateur dramatics group can
       achieve
to encourage involvement in the group’s activities and support the
      development of individual skills
 to have fun!!!!!!!!!!
In short, we aim high – not because we have to but because we want to.

The years roll by, members (and audiences!!) come and go. But we believe that ACT will soldier on for at least another 30 years. If you have never seen an ACT show, why not come along and see us soon? See our ‘future productions’ section for further details. Or join our mailing list so that we can always keep you informed about what’s going on. Even better, join us, even if all you want to do is come and enjoy our social evenings.  We’re a friendly bunch who will make you feel more than welcome. See our ‘contacts’ section. But beware those who join us ‘just to have a glass of vino at a social’ or ‘just to show the audience to their seats’ usually end up on stage anyway!!

Thank you for visiting us – we hope you find something to interest you. In fact, more than that..... we hope you find it so interesting that you will want to join us and help keep ACT at the forefront of amateur dramatics in Cyprus.
